Charley German Honored with Robert C. Welch Volunteer Attorney Project Award
(Kansas City, April 30, 2009)-Rouse Hendricks German May PC co-founder and shareholder Charley German has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Robert C. Welch Volunteer Attorney Project Award in Kansas City.
The award goes to attorneys who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to the delivery of pro bono legal services in the Kansas City area.
"Never in the history of the Volunteer Attorney Project has one person done so much, so quickly to further pro bono efforts in the Kansas City community," said Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association President Rebbecca Lake Wood.
In 2008 German worked to create two special initiatives within the KCMBA Homelessness Project. First, the Transactional Law Project matches up transactional lawyers with non-profit organizations that serve the homeless. And second, the Warrant Relief Project helps homeless shelter residents with outstanding municipal court warrants obtain free legal representation to address the warrants.
"Since February 2008, the Warrant Relief Project has helped 68 clients eliminate warrants, which in turn has helped them to overcome the barriers to securing employment and affordable housing," Ms. Lake Wood said. "After recognizing crucial legal needs that were being unmet, Charlie gathered forces, created new projects, recruited volunteers, and made sure services were delivered all within a matter of a few months."
"It's truly a thrill to be recognized by my peers and my friends at the Volunteer Attorney Project," German said. "But this honor is not mine alone. It is a testament to all of the members of the Kansas City legal community whose involvement and commitment makes these projects possible."
About the Volunteer Attorney Project
The Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Lawyers Association of Kansas City and the Kansas City Bar Foundation co-sponsor the project serving residents of Jackson, Clay and Platte counties. VAP in Kansas City began operation in 1982 with an initial enrollment of 46 attorneys. Today, in addition to the over 550 individual attorneys participating, a total of 13 law firms and in-house corporate counsel have joined VAP's panel of volunteers. Each year these volunteers deliver services to hundreds of Kansas City area residents.
